How Many Bricks, Tiles, or Bags of Concrete Do You Actually Need?

Every material estimate follows the same basic shape: measure the area, work out how many units (or how much volume) that requires, then add a buffer for waste and cuts. The buffer is where most DIY estimates go wrong — too little and you're back at the merchant mid-project paying a higher per-unit price for a top-up order; too much and you've overspent on materials you don't need. Here's how the buffer and the underlying math actually work for four common projects.

The waste allowance, and why it exists

No wall, room, or slab lines up perfectly with the size of the material covering it. Bricks get cut at corners and around openings. Tiles get trimmed at the edges of a room. Concrete gets slightly over-ordered because a truck can't deliver an exact fraction of a load twice. A waste allowance — typically 10% for straightforward layouts, higher for complex ones — covers this without meaningfully changing the cost of the project.

Bricks

Bricks needed = Wall area (m²) × Bricks per m² × 1.10

Wall area is simply length × height. The bricks-per-square-meter figure depends on brick size and bond pattern — a standard UK brick in a common bond typically works out to around 60 bricks per m², though this varies by brick size and mortar joint width, so check the figure for your specific bricks.

Worked example: a wall 5m long and 2.4m high, at 60 bricks/m²:

Tiles

Tiles needed = (Room area ÷ Tile area) × (1 + waste %)

Room area and tile area both need to be in the same units before dividing. A common mistake is dividing room area in square meters by a tile size still in centimeters — convert the tile's side length to meters first.

Worked example: a 4m × 3m room, 45cm tiles, 10% waste:

Always round the final figure up to a whole tile — you can't buy a fraction of one, and rounding down is how projects come up short.

Concrete

Volume (m³) = Length × Width × Thickness (in meters) Cubic yards = Volume (m³) × 1.30795

Concrete is ordered by volume, not area, which is the detail people most often miss — a slab's thickness matters just as much as its footprint. Thickness is usually given in centimeters or inches on a plan, so it needs converting to meters before multiplying.

Worked example: a 6m × 4m slab, 10cm thick:

Ready-mix suppliers typically quote and deliver by the cubic yard, so having both figures handy makes it easier to compare quotes or place an order.

Flooring

Flooring to buy = Room area (m²) × (1 + waste %)

Flooring is the simplest of the four — no unit conversion needed, just area plus a waste allowance for cuts around the room's edges and any awkward corners.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the waste allowance entirely. Ordering the exact calculated quantity with 0% buffer is the single most common way projects run short mid-job.
  • Mixing units. Tile sizes are usually in centimeters or inches while room dimensions are in meters or feet — convert everything to the same unit before calculating.
  • Forgetting thickness for concrete. Area alone isn't enough — a slab twice as thick needs twice the volume of concrete for the same footprint.
  • Rounding down. Always round a final material count up to the next whole unit; rounding down guarantees you'll be short by at least one piece.
